Movies made for the Blu-ray 3D format will be coming out this year, giving you a reason to spend a ton of money just to be able to play ‘em. If you’re looking to set up a new-millennium home theater, here’s what you’re going to need: an HDTV that supports 3D video, a Blu-ray 3D player to play movies with, and a set of digital 3D glasses to get the full eye-popping, in-your-face 3D effect. The first Blu-ray 3D movie title has been announced at CES, and it’ll be…
…Cue drumroll…
Dreamworks’ latest 3D-animated flick, Monsters Vs. Aliens.
This has been announced by Samsung (they worked with Dreamworks for the landmark release), along with Samsung’s announcement of a new line of 3D-compatible devices that include 3D HDTVs, the BD-C6900 Blu-ray 3D player, and Samsung’s active shutter 3D glasses.

MvA will be the first title to be released in Blu-ray 3D format. If you don't want to spend that much, this double DVD pack comes with four "conventional" 3D glasses.
Other 3D titles haven’t been announced yet (they didn’t announce release dates either), but here’s the thing: If you had a ton of money to throw into buying expensive 3D video-playing equipment (remember: that’s the top-of-the-line big-screen HDTV, disc player and 3D glasses combo. You’ll probably want a sound system that supports HD surround too), would you spend it on something that your kids would enjoy more than you would? We’re thinking a debut title like Avatar or a 3D-remaster of “300” might make us want to rob a bank just to make this setup happen. And if you’re saying that Monsters Vs. Aliens is something on your “must-watch list,” we’re thinking you wouldn’t be able to afford this yet (unless you’re young and rich. In which case, hi Miley Cyrus!).
Now, we’re not saying we won’t watch Monsters Vs Aliens, but we’re not spending that much for watching this in full digital 3D. The Double-DVD pack comes with way-cheaper 3D glasses (the kind with red and blue lenses) anyway—four of them for the family. We’re also not necessarily telling you to avoid the whole 3D thing. Because really, if you can manage to afford the whole 3D setup–today’s Holy Grail of home entertainment, so to speak–we think you’re awesome, and we should be friends. Can we come over?
