Great for adventurers, thrill-seekers, extreme sport enthusiasts, and Jackass-wannabees.

First the basics: the compact Playsport captures 5-megapixel stills and 30fps videos in full 1080p HD, and shows them on a high-contrast 2-inch color LCD display built into a frame that can take a fair bit of physical abuse. How much abuse? This HD camcorder is listed to plunge down 10 feet of water, and can withstand a fair bit of shock, dust, and extreme temperatures.

The Playsport's body is waterproof down to 10 feet. It's also durable enough to withstand crashes, drops, bumps, and idiots.

Electronic image stabilization and face tracking tech helps optimize shaky action scenes, and storage comes in the form of an SDHC card slot (for adding up to 32GBs of memory)—it doesn’t come with internal memory, but SDHC cards do have their advantages: They’re cheap, they’re durable, and, since they’re compact and easily replaceable, you can always bring a bunch in case you run out of storage (Fun fact: a 1GB SD card can store around 20 minutes of 720p/30fps HD footage—enough for an episode of your “Watch me antagonize this Grizzly bear” reel, with space left over for commercials).

The Playsport is bundled with software for instant online uploads to Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, as well as video editing software that lets you edit and trim videos. The device also comes with an HDMI port for playing video straight to an HDTV and a slow-motion playback function. Slow-mo in HD with a rugged videocam… can you imagine the possibilities? Depending on who you are and what you want to do, this cam is tough enough to record you do it. Whether you plan to go hang-gliding with your nuts hanging out, play tag with a male African elephant in heat, shave your entire body  with a dull blade in a pool filled with sharks, or throw a cup of beer at Ron Artest during an NBA game, this cam should survive to tell the tale (in slow-mo HD, no less). Even if you don’t.

Available in Abyss (black), Wave Crash (blue) and Adrenaline Rush (purple), the Playsport will start shipping in April for $150.Accessories for the Playsport will also be made available, including helmet/handlebar mounts, cases straps and bags, as well as flexible tripods to make it easier to take along.
