Toshiba has officially launched their third-gen netbook, the NB305, based on Intel’s new Pine Trail Atom platform. Set to debut at CES 2010, the new netbook is highlighted by a slim (less than an inch thick) body, light weight (tipping the scales at just 2.6 pounds), and an impressive 6-cell battery that’s listed to last for up to 11 hours on a single charge—good enough to last you through a long flight to another continent.
Drive space has also been upgraded from the previous generation (standard drive size for the NB300/305 starts at 250GB; up from the NB200/205’s 160GB hard drive. It’s still a bit small compared to the 500GB ceilings on the latest batch of netbooks we’ve been hearing about), and will come pre-installed with Windows 7 as well as some of Toshiba’s notebook apps that includes Bulletin Board (customized desktops with To-Do lists, calendars, and photos), and ReelTime (sort of a visual representation of “My Recent Documents” that shows a ribbon of recently opened files).

The Sleep-and-Charge port: a gift from the gadget genie
Interestingly, this netbook comes with another travel bonus called a “Sleep-and-Charge” port: basically one USB port that lets users charge mobile devices even when the netbook is turned off. It’s like having a gadget genie suddenly appear and grant you a wish—you know, the stupid, thoughtless kind you tend to mutter out while traveling with a boring crowd and your iPod just ran out of juice. Somewhere along the lines of “dammit, I wish I had a way to charge this thing right now”. Then a Genie suddenly pops out, grants your once-in-a-lifetime wish by giving you the Sleep-and-Charge port, and disappears. “Thank you gadget genie!” you say, before kicking yourself for not wishing for a new iPhone 3GS instead. (Are you still with us? Good.)
1GB of memory, card reader, and Wi-fi b/g/n, round out the NB300/305’s features. The NB300 will cost $350, while the NB305 is a plusher model that adds a chiclet-style keyboard and more color schemes for $400.
