The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project gave out details into their next project—a tablet PC that’s rugged, low-powered, and cheap—for educating children in developing countries called the XO-3 tablet. After having a hand in helping develop the low-cost laptop that we now know as the netbook, this next concept device might help give a glimpse into what we’ll all be using in the years to come.
These photos are all concept images, but it’s something that’s definitely being worked on. Details for the XO-3 tablet include a camera behind the screen, as well as a “no holes” design which would mean that charging the device would be done wirelessly. Other details include a plastic panel that reinforces the screen, and a retractable ring along one corner to make it easy to handle and stow.

The XO-3 will run on a compact, low-power ARM processor and will use a display developed by Pixel Qi—a low-cost screen that’s designed to be readable under direct sunlight while also featuring a low-power Epaper mode.
It’s going to take a while to come out though; the XO-3 is set to be available in 2012.
