Viewsonic has just introduced the VMP70, a direct-connect HD media player that plays digital multimedia (photos, music, and videos) stored in a hard drive or flash drive straight to an HDTV.
The VMP70 supports full 1080p HD video playback and connects to HDTVs via HDMI cable. The box itself won’t come with internal storage or a network connection, but it comes with a pair of USB ports for plugging in external sources such as external drives and flash drives. IT also comes with the usual component AV output connections, as well as an S/PDIF port for connecting it to home entertainment systems.
A wide range of file formats are supported, including JPG, JPEG, BMP, PHG, GIF photo formats, MPEG 1/2/4, DivX/Xvid, H.264, VC-1, WMV9, RM/RMVB (and more) for videos, and WMA, MP3, DTS, OGG, AAC, (2-channel), Real Audio for digital audio and music.
The VMP70 is now available for $129, but is currently tagged with a holiday promo price of $99.
