Microsoft has recently announced that they’ll be coming out with a free version of their productivity suite called the Office 2010 Starter Edition. The new free version will include very basic, watered-down versions of Excel and Word, and will display advertisements along a sidebar.
It should be available by next year, but it won’t come as a free download though—the free version of Microsoft Office will only ship along with new Windows 7 computers, and will come with an option to upgrade to more full-featured (paid) versions.
We really won’t know right now how functional the free versions are–especially when you compare it to similar productivity software such as OpenOffice. For all we know, it could either be useful for people who only need the basic features, or it could be another annoyance–part of the “free” junk that usually comes with a new PC.
