Western Digital has also come up with new updates for their My Book Studio and Elite external desktop drives, by adding a customizable “e-label” screen for checking the drive’s capacity and status.

The e-label is an external e-paper screen that displays the drive name, available storage, and security status even when the drive isn’t connected and powered up. The drive name can be changed using the WD SmartWare software to label drive contents (such as “Installers”, or “Clients”, or “Photos”).

Available in 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB capacities, the My Book Elite connects via USB 2.0, while the higher-end My Book Studio ranges from 500GB to 2TB. Designed for Macs, the My Book Studio also adds a faster FireWire 800 interface along with a USB 2. connection. Both drives are equipped with 256-bit hardware-based encryption for security, and come with WD’s SmartWare software for doing backups and security tasks.
Available now, the My Book Elite sells between $170 to $280, while the Studio models are priced between $150 to $300 depending on capacity.
