HP has launched two 13.3-inch notebooks that offer performance and portability without having to trim down to netbook specs. The launch is headlined by the ProBook 5310m, a 3.8-pound notebook with performance specs packed into an aluminum/magnesium alloy shell that measures less than an inch thick.
The ProBook 5310m includes options for running either a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo processor for performance or an energy-efficient 1.2GHz Celeron for a longer battery life, and memory options for either 2 or 4GBs of DDR3 memory with a 1066 or 1333MHz frequency. Storage options run from 160GB to 320GB 7200rpm hard drives or a 128GB solid state drive and an optional external DVD burner. Graphics on this notebook is limited to an integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD for powering the 13.3-inch LED-backlit screen.
The rest of the ProBook’s spec includes a 2MP webcam, Wi-fi b/g/draft-n, and a 4-cell battery. Pricing for the ProBook 5310m starts at $699 for the Celeron-based system, while the Core 2 Duo configuration sells for $899.

The Pavilion dm3 is also a 13.3-inch ultraportable, but comes at a lower price range and a selection of either an Intel CULV or AMD’s Neo X2 processor and ATI or Nvidia-based graphics solutions, with the AMD-ATI platform allowing users to switch between dedicated and integrated graphics for performance or power efficiency.
The Pavilion dm3 is priced at $549 for an AMD system and $649 for an Intel-based system. Both notebooks ship next month by the time Windows 7 rolls around.
