Spawn Labs has released a new way for gamers to play on any console from another room or on the road. The concept is centered around a small box called the Spawn HD-720 that connects between the internet or home network (via a router) and a game console.
Like a SlingBox for gaming, the kit can stream a game running on the console to an internet-connected PC from just about anywhere—as long as your bandwidth can keep up. Remote players simply install the free Spawn Player software and plug in a gamepad to a computer, and it’s all set.
Up to two consoles can be connected at a time, and the Spawn HD-720 can transmit 720p HD-quality content (at 30fps) remotely to let gamers connect across distances using a single console. The video quality will automatically downscale when running it through a low-bandwith connection, but local networks should work fine for accessing the console from another room. For players out on the road, the software also allows you to turn the console on or off as if you were there; it won’t let you change the disc loaded in the slot, but that’s what console hard drives are for. (Mobile phones should work just as well—just ask someone at home to change the disc.)
Supported consoles include Microsoft’s Xbox and Xbox 360, Nintendo’s Wii and Gamecube, and Sony’s Playstation 2 and 3. The software automatically recognizes game pads for the Xbox 360 and PS3 when they’re plugged into the USB port, and allows for using either controller with another console. We’re not sure how this works with Nintendo’s motion-sensitive Wiimote, though.
The Spawn HD-720 is available now for $199.
