Palm has just unveiled a budget touchscreen phone called the Pixi. Meant as a direct replacement for the Centro, the phone is built around Palm’s webOS smartphone platform (the second phone to feature webOS, after the Palm Pre), with a QWERTY keypad for messaging and 2.6-inch multi-touch screen for easy navigation.

As nice as it is to have both a QWERTY keypad and a multi-touch screen on a mono-body smartphone, the rest of the Pixi’s spec is a bit on the average side. To keep the price down, the Pixi is fitted with a 2MP camera, and no Wi-fi connectivity. It can still connect to the Net through 3G though, and it also comes with a GPS receiver and 8GBs of internal storage.

The software includes some nifty features for the user, like a Linked Contacts feature that pulls a person’s contact info from Facebook, Google and MS Outlook, and combining into one entry (sort of like your personal stalker). Online IM services such as AIM, Google Talk, and Yahoo! Messenger is also supported by the Linked Contacts feature. The apps also include a full HTML browser, with a universal search tools that can trawl through Google, Googfe Maps, Wikipedia and Twitter… Making it even more of a pity that it doesn’t have Wi-fi. Additional apps can be downloaded through Palm’s App Catalog.

Palm also debuts with the Artist Series that offers limited-edition back cover designs for customization.

The Palm Pixi is listed to be “coming soon on Sprint”, and is expected to be released in time for the Holidays.
