Sony’s new Walkman player, the S540 series, comes with a large 2.4-inch QVGA display for showing videos and something that other portable players (at least the more popular ones) don’t: built-in stereo speakers.
Available in 8GB and 16GB capacities, the S540 still comes with standard we-expect-them-to-be-here features that include an FM Tuner, a 3.5mm jack for connecting a headset, and a USB connection for connecting to a PC, but the speakers definitely make it stand out. The S540 supports AVC, MPEG-4, and WMV video formats that can be viewed in a portrait or landscape mode, and a built-in mic for recording audio.
The S540’s built-in battery is also pretty good–rated for 42 hours on music and 6.5 hours of video playback with a headset plugged in. Battery life drops down to 17 hours of audio and 5 hours of video with the speakers on, but that’s still pretty good by any standard; that’s still worth a couple of movies, or more straight hours of music than you’d care to listen to on mobile speakers anyway.
Available in four color sets, the S540 is currently up for preorders on Sony’s website for $110 (8GB) and $130 (16GB).

Sony has also introduced a new E-series player, the E440. Compared to the S540, this porta-player is much cheaper at $80 for 8GB and $130 for 16GB, but comes with a smaller 2-inch screen, no built-in speakers, and a shorter rated battery life of 30 hours for music and 4 hours of video playback. Both players ship in September.
