Logitech has just moved computer mouse technology a step forward with two new mice equipped with a new technology called Darkfield Laser Tracking, the Performance Mouse MX and the Anywhere Mouse MX. The new tracking tech essentially allows for a mouse to be used on surfaces that other optical and laser mice won’t usually work, such as on high-gloss surfaces or clear glass (that’s at least 4mm thick).
Logitech’s Darkfield Laser Tracking tech (awesome name, by the way) differs from a regular laser tracker by using “dark field microscopy” to detect micro particles and scratches on glass and glossy surfaces rather than tracking the textures of the surface itself (which is what regular laser trackers do).

The two new mice cover two obvious market segments, desktops and laptops. The full-sized Performance Mouse MX sports a sculpted right-handed shape (sorry, lefties) and a micro-USB port that allows for charging via a wall socket or through a USB cable. The Performance Mouse MX also features a force-sensitive side-to-side scroll button and adds four customizable buttons along the thumb for switching between apps, for going forward or back on a webpage, or zooming in and out of photos.

The Anywhere Mouse MX is a compact mouse for packing along with a laptop, and is bundled with its own travel pouch. Both Logitech Darkfield Laser models feature hyper-fast scrolling that offers both smooth scrolling for fast read-throughs or click-to-click precision, and come with Logitech’s tiny Unifying receiver USB module that can read multiple compatible devices without having to plug in multiple receivers.
Both MX models are expected to be released this month in US and Europe. The Performance Mouse MX will sell for $100, while the Anywhere Mouse MX retails for $80.
