Canon has just updated its S-series of performance compacts with the PowerShot S90. Sort of a cross between the G-series’ performance and the Digital ELPH/ IXUS line’s compact design, the PowerShot S90 is tagged as a “photographer’s compact” that sports full manual controls and RAW image shooting.
The PowerShot S90 sports a wide angle (28-105mm) lens with a 3.8x optical zoom up front, a 3-inch LCD display at the back, and a high-sensitivity 10MP sensor (like the one on the new G11) that’s listed to come up with better noise performance. The controls also include a customizable control ring that can used for quick menu navigation or be set to quickly adjust shot settings (such as exposure compensation, shutter speed, ISO, etc).

To satisfy advanced photographers’ demands for fast shutter speeds, the S90’s wide aperture f/2.0 lens allows the camera to take in more light and a shallower depth of field. For everyone else, the cam is also equipped with Smart Auto and Scene Detection tech that analyzes a scene and automatically selects from 22 scene presets for an easy, optimized shot.
The PowerShot S90 will be out in October for $430.
