If someone creates a camera and packs a mobile phone’s inner workings around it (as opposed to the other way around), is it a cam-phone or a phone-cam? A report over at GSMArena shows a new cam-phone (or phone-cam) by Altek packing a 12MP cam and a 3x optical zoom making the rounds in Chinese territory.
Known as the Altek T8680, the mobile sports a pretty good spec list for a phone, with a 3-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, GSM-EDGE network support, plus USB, TV-out and PictBridge connectivity. The camera functions definitely makes this phone stand out, with the aforementioned 12MP sensor and 3x optical zoom lens headlining a full-featured digicam that also includes a Xenon flash and VGA recording.

According to the report, the device is built with a separate imaging processor to handle the 12MP stills, plus in-cam tech that includes face and smile detection, sensitivity that tops out at ISO 3200, and multiple scenes and shooting modes.
It’s set to sell in China for 3000 Yuan (around US$438) sometime between August to September, but there’s no word if it’ll ever be seen in other markets. Major mobile players like Samsung, Nokia and LG should be previewing phones with 12MP snappers soon though, and those should be available for everyone else.
