RIM has just launched it’s first “entry-level” QWERTY smartphone, the BlackBerry Curve 8520. Featuring a 2.64-inch screen and a full QWERTY keypad, the 8520 sports a slightly larger screen compared to the Curve 8900 (2.4-inches) released last year, but keeps the price down by having a lower-res screen listed at 320×240, and a 2MP camera. (The 8900 by comparison, sports a 480×360 resolution and a 3.15MP cam.) The new Curve also does away with the trackball in favor of an optical trackpad for easier navigation.
It’s apparently designed for multimedia, built with dedicated media control keys along the top edge, a 3.5mm headset jack, and a microSDHC card slot for up to 32GBs of storage. Built-in apps include a photo uploader for easily uploading photos to Flickr, FaceBook and MySpace, and support for BlackBerry’s App World.
The new Curve doesn’t come with 3G data network support (it’s limited to EDGE), but has Wi-fi b/g for connecting to the net, and Bluetooth for connecting to other devices.
The Curve 8529 will be out first on T-Mobile and will support the carrier’s HotSpot Calling feature that allows VOIP calls to be made via Wi-fi. It will be released on August 5th for $130 with a two-year contract.
