Asus launches new netbook with an optical drive, the Eee PC 1004DN Asus eeepc1004dn odd

After thinking that we’ve already seen just about everything there is to see in this generation’s crop of netbooks (or, technically, the crop of netbooks based on this batch of Intel Atom processors), Asus pulls out a new 10-inch Eee PC called the 1004DN. The new netbook still runs on an Atom N280 processor, but sports a few extras that make it more than your usual netbook. The Eee PC 1004DN is listed to be the first netbook that comes with a built-in optical drive.

This netbook is also the first to use Intel’s (relatively) new GN40 chipset to go along with the N280 processor (both of which were launched in January this year). Compared to the usual Intel 945G chipset that the usual netbook runs on, the GN40 is touted–at least by Intel–to improve on the old 945G chipset by offering better graphics acceleration for handling 720p and net-based 1080p HD videos (that’s “website-based HD”, not “Blu-ray HD”, mind you).

The rest of the Eee PC 1004DN’s spec is pretty solid, including 1GB of memory, a 1.8-inch, 120GB ZIF hard drive, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-fi, and Bluetooth. Extras include a built-in 1.3MP Webcam, a multi-touch pad, and–another feature that’s quite rare on a netbook—a fingerprint scanner for security. It also runs on a 6-cell battery that’s rated to last for just under hours, bringing the total weight up to around 1.45kg, which is a bit heavy for a netbook.

It has just been launched in Taiwan for the equivalent of around US$600, but the rest of the world should expect to see it soon.
