Asus has announced a pair of new gaming notebooks under their Republic of Gamers (ROG) product line. Fresh from winning the “Best Choice” award in the Digital Entertainment Products category at this year’s COMPUTEX, the 15.6-inch G51 sports an exterior design inspired by manga and science fiction robots (and probably a little from Alienware’s stylized laptops), and a pretty powerful spec that includes Intel Core 2 Duo / Core 2 Quad processors, DDR2 800MHz memory, and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 260M graphics.
Asus is claiming the G51 to be the world’s first 15-incher to fit Nvidia’s GTX 260M graphics chip, but iBUYPOWER’s Battalion 101 M865TU was released earlier, claiming the same thing. It makes no difference who came first though, since this gaming laptop is still pretty sweet, with processor options that range from 2.0 to 3.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors to 2.0-2.26GHz Core 2 Quads. The system fits up to 4GB of DDR2 800MHz memory, 1GB of dedicated GDDR3 graphics memory, and storage options that can run up to 1TB via a pair of 5400-rpm SATA hard drives.
The rest of the setup includes a LED-backlit screen, Multi-DVD or Blu-ray drives, a 2MP cam, and a Windows Vista Ultimate or Premium OS. For people who might want a slightly larger screen, the G60 features the exact same spec and a 16-inch display.
Both the G51 and G60 are eligible for Asus’ Windows 7 Upgrade Program. Anyone who purchases (and registers) any of the listed Asus products within June 26 2009 to January 31 2010 qualifies, although the mechanics don’t say anything about a “free upgrade”.
