Sony Ericsson’s GreenHeart program is the company’s effort to produce green, sustainable products. The first phones made for this initiative – the C901 GreenHeart and Naite models – have been launched and will be out in stores by the second and third quarters of this year.
These phones have casings made of at least 50% recycled plastics. Waterborne paint was used to coat the phones since it lowers exposure to Volative Organic Compounds (VOC). They also use a display light sensor that’s optimized to consumer less energy, and they come with an electronic, in-phone manual to save paper. Both also use a low-power charger, which reduces the phones’ total carbon footprints by 15%. In addition, the C901 GreenHeart is bundled with the MH300 GreenHeart headset that’s made from 100% recycled plastics in 4 out of 5 hard plastic parts.
Specs for the phones are pretty basic, but adequate. The C901 GreenHeart flagship model (shown above) has a 5-megapixel camera with up to 16x digital zoom, Xenon flash and video recording, Bluetooth connectivity, plus photo geo-tagging and Google Maps. The Naite on the other hand, has simpler specs – a 2-megapixel camera with 2.5x digital zoom, video recording, video calling, Google Maps and Bluetooth connectivity. The C901 GreenHeart supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA and it will be out by the second quarter of 2009, while the Naite (shown below) supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE and it will start shipping in 2009’s third quarter.
