HDMI Licensing LCC, the group responsible for licensing the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) specification, has finally unveiled the new features of the new HDMI 1.4 interface. The most noteworthy inclusions will be the addition of networking capabilities, and an Audio Return Channel for two-way audio streams via the HDMI cable.
The HDMI Ethernet Channel adds a data channel to the cable that enables high-speed (100MB/sec) data transfers between supported devices. This connection makes devices IP-ready, and they also allow for Internet sharing through the HDMI interface. The HDMI 1.4 cable’s Audio Return Channel significantly reduces the cable clutter for connecting two devices (such as an HDTV and an A/V receiver) for delivering audio processing and playback.
The HDMI 1.4 spec will also include a 3D over HDMI feature, as well as 4k x 2k resolution support for resolutions that are four times the resolution of 1080p. the new format will also include a smaller micro HDMI connector for portable devices, and an Automotive Connection System designed for in-vehicle HD connectivity.
The HDMI 1.4 interface will be available in a selection of different cables, depending on the needs. The spec includes a Standard DMI cable for supporting data rates up to 1080i/60, and a High Speed HDMI cable for data rates beyond 1080p that includes Deep Color and 3D support. Both standard and high-speed cables will also feature variants with Ethernet support. A separate Automotive HDMI cable–built to withstand heat, noise and vibration–allows for connection between external and in-car HDMI devices.
