MSI’s two new 15.4-inch gaming notebooks may look the same with their metallic lids and loud red trim, but they’re based on two very different platforms. The GX623 runs on Intel’s Centrino 2 mobile platform that incorporates a Core 2 Duo processor, while the GX633 goes the AMD route with a Turion X2 Ultra under the hood.
As gaming laptops, the two also sport discrete graphics cards, with the GX623 sporting an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4670 (with 512MB DDR3 memory), while the GX633 features Nvidia’s GeForce GT 130M GPU via the MCP77 chipset. Both models come with space for up to 4GB DDR2 667/800 memory and hard drive options that run up to 500GB. That’s just about where the differences end; both look pretty similar and are surrounded by the same peripherals and connectivity options, including stereo speakers, DVDRW/Blue-ray drives, 2MP Webcams, card reader, Gigabit LAN, Wi-fi b/g, and Bluetooth.
MSI puts the dedicated GPUs to good use with the addition of HDMI ports for connecting to HD displays and support for 7.1 channel audio. Both models also come with MSI’s latest performance features, in the form of the company’s own Turbo Drive Engine Technology that overclocks the CPU for more performance with a dedicated button, and ECO Engine Power Management System that offers different performance modes for a longer battery life. A touch-sensitive strip above the keyboard also gives the notebook a modern look.
MSI has given no word on pricing and availability yet.
