One of the iPhone’s closest touchscreen contenders, the Google Android-powered T-Mobile G1, is currently on sale at Amazon for $97.99 for a new two-year contract. That’s a little disheartening if you just got your G1 through T-Mobile’s site for the regular price, but if you’re looking to get a new G1 now, the price cut nets you $82 off the provider’s regular two-year deal.

Word across the interwebs is that the G1’s update is coming real soon (as soon as next month), which might explain the price cut for stockroom-clearing purposes. The HTC Magic, a slimmer version of the HTC Dream that T-Mobile renamed, is a likely candidate to follow the G1 down the line—most probably as the G2.
