Just a few weeks after Panasonic announced the waterproof Lumix TS1—and a few seasons behind Olympus’ SW series—Canon announces their own “tough” cam, the PowerShot D10. A compact 12.1-megapixel camera built with a recognizable body, the D10 is waterproof to 10 meters, dust proof, freeze-proof to -10°C, and shock-proof for withstanding 1.22-meter drops. It also sports a 3x optical zoom and a 2.5-inch PureColor LCD II screen (with a 2mm protective shield).
Featuring Canon’s DIGIC 4 image processor, the D10 features a Smart Auto mode that uses Scene Detection tech for quick and easy operation, along with a number of other technologies to help users get the best shot off. It’s also equipped with Image Stabilization, Motion Detection technology, Face Detection, Face Select and Track, Blink Detection, and in-cam Red-Eye correction.
The D10 will limit your shooting modes to Auto, Scene, and Movie (30fps VGA), which means that there isn’t much room for manual tweaking, but it does offer 18 scene modes that include Program, Long Shutter, Stitch Assist, Underwater, Aquarium, and Macro.
The camera’s frame is built to be able to accommodate a number of optional accessories, including a range of straps, a colored front cover set, and a soft case for additional protection.
The PowerShot D10 will be available in May 2009, with an SRP of $329.99.
