Hitachi announces 500GB hard drive for audio and video applications
Storage - Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Hitachi’s releasing the CinemaStar C5K500, a 2.5-inch hard drive with 500GB of audio video storage. Designed to be used for applications that run continuously round-the-clock, this drive is built to have a lower 1.4W power usage (at least 22% than previous models), which translates to lower energy costs. Those concerned with carbon footprints will be glad to know that this drive has a small one, as it has a halogen-free design.
The CinemaStar C5K500 utilizes Hitachi SmoothStream technology for enhanced video streaming, and also does time-limited error recovery, as well as enhanced thermal monitoring capabilities. Silent-seek acoustic make it run quietly too. This drive is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2009.
