Toshiba’s new 9.9mm-slim TG01 looks set to out-iPhone the iPhone while running on a 1GHz Snapdragon chipset and Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. Toshiba slapped on their own finger-friendly interface on top of the OS, but unlike the HTC Touch line’s interface that comes in the form of a rotating 3D 3-sided ‘box’ and finger swipes to get to different screens, the TG01’s front-end makes use of the built-in accelerometer to flip through open apps. There’s an obvious lack of hardware buttons on the body (compared to a lot of other Windows Mobile-based smartphones which at least had a 5-way d-pad and call/end buttons, but the TG01 hopes to make up for it with on-screen controls.

In comparison, the TG01 is slimmer than the iPhone 3G, although the length and width (at 130 x 71mm) makes it a bit tougher to slip into tighter pockets, but it does come with a larger 4.1-inch screen with a 480×800 WVGA resolution to make it easier for games and movies (it comes with support for DivX video). It runs a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD2850 processor to give it some mobile processing oomph, and it comes with only 512MBs of internal storage, but makes up for it with a microSDHC card slot with support for up to 32GB cards.

The rest of the TG01’s spec looks pretty good for something this slim: HSDPA data network support, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-fi 802.11b/g, built in GPS (with A-GPS function) and a 3.15-megapixel camera.

Available in Black and white color sets, the Toshiba TG01 is expected to be released in Europe in the second quarter this year.
