Olympus has been churning out extremely hardy cameras for years already, but this year, the company’s taking its rugged cameras to a whole other level with the Stylus Tough 8000 series. Adventurers, take heed! As the name so obviously implies, the Stylus Tough series is seriously tough with shockproof, waterproof, freezeproof, crushproof bodies, including reinforced 2.7-inch LCD screens.
Whether you’re going mountain climbing, doing water and winter sports, or just being plain accident prone, defying the elements will be a walk in the park with these point-and-shoots. They will survive being dropped at a maximum height of 6.6 feet, immersed in water up to 33 feet, frozen at 14°F/-10°C, and crushed by 220 pounds of pressure. As if that wasn’t enough, Olympus outfitted the cameras with dual image stabilization technology, which makes sure shots are steady and images stay sharp and bright in all conditions.
The Olympus Stylus Tough 8000 series takes pictures at 12 megapixels, with 3x optical zoom. They’ll have 45MB of internal memory, plus expansion card slots for xD-picture cards and microSD cards. The cameras will ship at $399 each. Also available is the Stylus Tough 6000 series, which have lower specs and will sell for $299 each.
